The theme of the message: “Building Ecclesial Communion is the key to Mission” encourages all of us at diocesan and parish level as well as the Institutes of Consecrated Life, Ecclesial Movements, and the entire People of God, to renew our commitment to proclaim the Gospel and give pastoral activity a greater missionary character. This morning, October 21, 2010 in Paris Sister Evelyne Franc, D.C., Superioress General of the Daughters of Charity, announced to the Sisters that Father Gregory Gay, C.M. has appointed Father Patrick J. GRIFFIN, C.M., member of U.S. Eastern Province as the new Director General of the Company of Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul for six years term. Father P. Javier Alvarez, C.M., previous Director General, was elected Vicar General of the Congregation of the Mission at last summer’s Assembly.

On Sunday October 17, 2010 St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, NY was blessed with the ceremonial reception of relics of Blessed Father Jerzy Popieluszko, chaplain of Poland’s SOLIDARITY and workers, martyr of Communist regime, kidnapped, tortured and sank in the reservoir of water electric plant in Wloclawek, Poland, by officers of Security Police on October 19, 1984. The Communist authorities ordered his execution for his inspiration of the people of Poland to maintain their courage and hope in face of relentless Marxist violence and terror in Poland’s fight for its freedom and independence. He was beatified in Warsaw earlier this year, in June. The relics, on the request of the St. Stanislaus Kostka parish, were donated by Archdiocese of Warsaw, Poland.

On the feast of Saint Luke the Evangelist, His Holiness Benedict XVI addresses a letter of support and encouragement to seminarians around the world. In ceremonies concluding the Year for Priests, the Pope had expressed his desire to speak directly to the tens of thousands of men preparing for priestly ministry. In his seven point letter, he tackles issues including priestly formation, the relevance of celibacy and the scandal of abuse. He begins his letter on a very personal note, taking them back to 1944, when he was drafted for military service: “the company commander asked each of us what we planned to do in the future. I answered that I wanted to become a Catholic priest. The lieutenant replied: “Then you ought to look for something else. In the new Germany priests are no longer needed”.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) celebrates each year on 16 October (since 1981), the day on which the Organization was founded in 1945. WFD is a worldwide event designed to increase awareness, understanding and informed, year-around action to alleviate hunger (find out more objectives). In the United States WFD is sponsored by 450 national, private voluntary organizations. This year’s theme in UNITED AGAINST HUNGER. Common Rules of the Congregation of the Mission emphasize the importance of regular spiritual exercises for Priests of the Mission. Thus, each year, every member of the community has to take part in five days retreat. This year 19 of the Confreres of New England Province came in to the Provincial Residence in Manchester, Connecticut, for days of reflection, dedication and sharing. Others have had their annual retreat in other time and places. The retreat started on Monday, October 4 in the late afternoon and the common lunch on Friday, October 8 concluded it. It was directed by Father Victor Hoagland, C.P. from St.Michael’s community in Union City, New Jersey .
