On Monday, June 28, 2010in Paris the 41st General Assembly of the Gongregation of the Mission has began. Its motto is “CREATIVE FIDELITY TO THE MISSION”. The Assembly is marked by the Year of 350th Anniversary of death of St. Vincent and St. Louise. It is one of the reasons it was organized at Maisons Mere of both Congregations – Priests of the Mission and Daughters of Charity. Chosen in the convocation letter of April 14, 2008 Superior General and his Council have chosen words from our Constitutions as theme for the Assembly: ”Faithful to the gospel…attentive to the signs of the times…open up new ways and use new means…remain in a continual state of renewal” (cf. C. 2). The Opening Mass presided by Fr. Gregory Gay, Superior General, was celebrated at 9 a.m. in the chapel of St.Vincent de Paul at altar where his remains are laid.

Forty-First General Assembly of the Congregation of the Mission starts in Mason Mere on Monday, June 28, 2010. Most of the participants, Provincials, delegates, translators and other staff are on their way to Paris, or at least they are packing up. This convocation of the global community of Vincentian Priests and Brothers is marked by 350th anniversary of the death of St. Vincent de Paul and St. Louise de Marillac. In this atmosphere of joy and expectations some Confreres are already at work in Paris.

On June 6, in well known Polish owned and styled Princess Manor Restaurant (92 Nassau Ave) Greenpoint, Brooklyn, NY an annual banquet event was held hosted by New York Group of Friends of the Association of John Paul II Foundation. NOWY DZIENNIK, Polish daily newspaper in New York, brought the story on the event in June 16 edition. During the banquet, each year some Polish priests are awarded in recognition of their merits for JP2 Foundation and Polish-American community. This year award went to Rev. Tadeusz Maciejewski, CM, the Pastor of SS. Cyril and Methodius Parish, Lower Greenpoint (since 2006).

On Friday morning of the Solemnity of Sacred Heart of Jesus Pope Benedict XVI lead the concelebrated Eucharist with thousands of priests from around the world on Saint Peter’s Swuare in Rome. This concluded the YEAR FOR PRIEST started on June 19 lat year. “The priesthood, then, is not simply «office» but sacrament: God makes use of us poor men in order to be, through us, present to all men and women, and to act on their behalf. This audacity of God who entrusts himself to human beings – who, conscious of our weaknesses, nonetheless considers men capable of acting and being present in his stead – this audacity of God is the true grandeur concealed in the word «priesthood».” – pope said in the beginning of his homily during the Mass. On June 23, 2010, by the decision of Bishop John B. McCormack of Manchester, two of our Confreres, Fr. Anthony Kuzia CM and Fr. John Sledziona CM will start their mission in St. Patrick’s Parish, Pelham, New Hampshire after years they spent in Concord, NH. Pelham is a town in Hillsborough County; southernmost place in state of New Hampshire with population of over 12,500 (Est. 2006). When you take I-93 Southward from Concord, NH (until Exit 3, where you must turn right to NH-111 toward Windham) you will get to Pelham, NH after 41 miles.

After 27 years, 4 months and one week Vincentians are leaving St. Peter’s Parish in Concord, NH. The Parish was taken over on February 1, 1983 with Fr. Chester Mrowka CM as first Vincentian pastor (8th in total). On September 1, 1983 he and two other confres, Fr. Mitchell Wanat CM and Brother Joseph Zurowski CM settled in St. Peter’s Rectory. They moved here from Laboure House , Bow, NH which suppressed the day before. The Vincentina history in this place began. In 1987 Fr. John Sledziona CM replaced Fr. Chet as pastor and superior and he was followed by Fr. Mitchell in 1996. In 2000 Fr. Francis Mcguire CM (Eastern Province) took pastorate. The recent Pastor was Fr. Anthony Kuzia CM, since 2005. In 2006, additionally he was appointed pasotr of neighboring Sacred Heart Parish and Fr. John became Director of Ckergy Formation. Today the history comes to an end.

Thirty years ago, today, last students graduated from St. John Kanty Prep in Erie, PA. Although enrollment for school year 1979-1980 was highest in school’s history (202 men) the graduation ceremony on June 8, 1980 was the last one. There were various reasons leading to this sad and sorrowful moment, generally, lack of funds and staff. Despite its closing, for next decades St. Kanty Prep stayed in its place. And those driving down or up East 38th Street in Erie could take look at characteristic building. And now, when you are on East 38th Street you cannot see John Kanty anymore. Bulldozeers demolished the edefice completely to ground during month of April. When the last wall came down, the legend came to the end, too… From now on it only will remains in memories of the Kanty Alumni and Erie people.

Being born in January 1924 Fr. Julian Szumilo CM is the oldest Confrere in the Province of New England and one of the oldest in all three Vincentian Provinces in the United States. This week Fr. “Jules” celebrates Diamond Jubilee of his priesthood. Almost half of these six decades he served as vicar and pastor in all Vincentian parishes in New England. For two terms he was the 2nd Provincial Superior in the time when the young Province shaped its new identity. Involved in parish missions and recollections. Served as chaplain either in USAF or in medical care centers as certified CPE. Faithfully, happily and zealously he ministered in the community until recent months when fully retired.
