Nieodłącznym elementem polskiej i misjonarskiej tradycji przeżywania Wielkiego Postu jest nabożeństwo Gorzkich Żali – rozważanie Męki Pańskiej – któremu towarzyszy wystawienie Najświętszego Sakramentu i specjalne, okolicznościowe kazanie, zwane pasyjnym.
