Superior’s General Advent Letter for mobile devices [eBook & Scribd]

Everyday use of various mobile devices: smartphones, tablets, Ebook readers is growing. You are visiting our website from your iPads, iPhones, Android terminals and cellphones more and more frequent. For your convenience CMNewEngland.org and and Famvin.org.pl the website of the Vincentian Family prepared Advent Letter 2013 of the Superior General of the Congregation of the Mission as E-book and for online reading at Scribd.com sharing service.

Created in ‘ePub’ format the Letter is much easier to download and open on your mobile device. Small volume of a file, which saves your bandwidth, and automatic resizing to fit you display make reading the document easier than ever.

This time, we didn’t make ‘ePub’ files for each of eight languages the Letter is written. We put together all text into one eight chapter long E-book: ADVENT 2013. One file – eight languages.

As this is experimental technology for us, we will welcome your opinion and comments on this E-book format for our Vincentian publications. We would like to give you resources in the most convenient way for you. Your feedback will help us improve the future publications.

New air conditioning system in St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Brooklyn

When Fr. Marek Sobczak CM became a pastor of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Brooklyn, NY on October 19, 2011 he wrote in the address to parishioners, ” three years ago when I was appointed pastor of this parish, the first request made of me by the PPC and many individual parishioners, was that air conditioning be installed in our church.” After some unexpected delays installation of new air conditioning system in the church could start in the summer this year.

In the already mentioned Fr. Sobczak’s 2011 address to parishioners we continue to read about the new air conditioning system, “please believe me, I took this request to heart and from that moment on, I have been investigating all our options regarding a cooling system in the church. During this period, there were meetings with many companies with expertise in installing these types of systems. Experts discussed which type of system would be most effective and functional, easy to maintain, economical yet would not destroy the magnificence of our church. There is a Polish saying, the deeper into the forest, the more trees. And thus describes this project.

Right from the start, we realized that our church did not have architectural plans. So one of our parishioners, an architect, had undertaken this tedious project. With great patience, he measured every nook and cranny of the church, every bend in the walls, and the thickness of the bricks and input all the information into his own computer.

The completed plans were then given to an engineering firm, to calculate the technical specifications required in the system. After many months we received the specs, unfortunately, the architectural team had doubts whether this would provide sufficient cooling in our church. We then turned to specialists for their analysis, but after many weeks (these) plans changed again, and we began investigating the possibility of using geothermal energy, that is, using water from underground to cool in the summer and heat in the winter.

Excavation was supposed to have been done by the end of June, however, this also moved at a snail’s pace. First we needed permits, and then it was hurricane Irene, and then other obstacles. Finally, a few weeks ago, and many witnessed this, equipment was brought in to drill between the church and rectory for groundwater. Unfortunately, the equipment was not strong enough, breaking the massive drill bits with each attempt, causing more delays while we waited for bigger equipment.

The next delay was caused by the sudden death of the lead architect of the project, Mr. Edvin Stromsten, who died of a massive heart attack at the beginning of September.

A year ago, I was convinced that the past summer would be easier to survive because there would be air conditioning; and now, my hope, even though waning, is that in June we will be starting up the cooling system.

In summary, plans to replace the boiler that heats the church, CCD building and annex, are still a reality. However, we are attempting to integrate the heating and cooling systems, and if we succeed in installing a combination system in the church, we will be able to install a smaller and more energy efficient boiler in the annex and the CCD building. I just want to reiterate, that the funds collected by Fr. Urbaniak for the boiler remain in a special account, and will be used for this purpose only.”

The “ePUB” files are usually smaller than PDF files and more suitable to use in mobile because they are optimized for various displays, need less space in your mobile storage and use less data transfer to download. You may need to install an eBok application in your device before you open “ePub” files. There are lots of them available for all mobile systems.

Number regular users of portable devices, smartphones, tablets and ebook readers is growing rapidly. Responding to this interest once again we “went mobile” and are offering you this year’s Lenten Letter of the Superior General, all eight language versions, in ePub format suitable for iPhone, iPad, Android, Blackberry or eBook reader. We believe, you will enjoy this solution. The ePub files are usually smaller than PDF files and more suitable to use in mobile because they need less space in your mobile storage and use less data transfer to download.

How to read ePub document on your device?

It is a sign of times, that Superior’s General message for Advent or Lent is published in many languages giving more people an opportunity to reflect and respond to the words of St. Vincent’s successor. The table below invites you to view the Lenten Letter in one of these languages: English, Polish, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, German and Slovak. Advent Letter 2011 in various languages and file formats

Letter for Advent 2011 addressed to all members of the world-wide Vincentian Family by the Superior General is brought in eight different languages this year. Additionally, technology allowed us to give it to you in different file formats PDF,TXT, EPUB. We believe, this efforts will help spread Fr. Greg’s Advent reflection to more people than previously, and reading or downloading it will be easier. Increasing use of technology in modern ministry and mission is one of the important goals of the Congregation of the Mission pointed out by 2010 General Assembly.

As you know, earlier this month our website went mobile increasing the comfort of viewing it on mobile devices. Along, we released a tiny, and simple application for smartphones which brings news from our Province directly to your mobiles. In the same time Famvin.org released another three similar applications called VinFeed and available in English, Polish and Spanish.

Number regular users of portable devices, smartphones, tablets and ebook readers is growing rapidly. Recognizing this situation, as we did earlier in the Lent, Superior’s General Advent reflection was prepared in ePub format which is used in ebook readers. Many other devices can handle it, too. However some device will require installation of additional plug-ins or apps to use this kind of files. As they are lighter in volume, they open faster on portables.
